What is BGP?

Without BGP, IP prefixes would not reach global eyeballs.

Border Gateway Protocol lets autonomous systems (AS) exchange reachability for IP prefixes. TMW operates AS215828 and uses BGP for protected transit, remote DDoS mitigation and customer handoff.

01

Autonomous systems and prefixes

An autonomous system is a network under single routing policy, identified by an ASN (e.g. AS215828). Operators announce IP prefixes (e.g. 203.0.113.0/24) to neighbours via BGP.

Each announcement carries attributes - AS-PATH, communities, MED - that influence how traffic enters your network.

02

Peering vs transit

Peering exchanges routes between networks often without payment (IXPs like DE-CIX). Transit buys upstream connectivity to the rest of the internet.

TMW peers at major exchanges and buys transit from tier-1 carriers for global reach.

03

BGP in DDoS mitigation

During mitigation, your prefix may be announced through a scrubbing provider's AS so attack traffic is filtered before delivery. GRE, cross-connect or BGP session returns clean traffic.

BGP communities signal actions: blackhole, prepend, or mark traffic for scrubbing. See our BGP communities page for AS215828 controls.

BGP FAQ

Do I need my own ASN for BGP DDoS protection?

Not always. You can originate via provider-managed LOA, or announce your own ASN if you operate one.

What is RPKI?

Resource Public Key Infrastructure validates that an AS is authorised to announce a prefix - reduces route hijacks.

Need BGP-routed protection?

AS215828 offers protected transit, remote scrubbing and published communities for operator control.
