DDoS Protection for Game Servers

Low-latency protection for UDP-heavy and real-time services.

Game server DDoS protection needs protocol-aware filtering, short network paths and careful tuning so mitigation does not harm player experience.

01

Why game servers are different

Games, voice servers and real-time applications often rely on UDP, custom ports and tight latency budgets. Protection must distinguish expected player traffic from floods without forcing every packet through heavy application checks.

02

What to protect

The game port is only one part of the surface. Query ports, voice services, web panels, launchers, APIs and DNS should be protected as well, because attackers often target the weakest dependency instead of the main server.

03

Latency-aware mitigation

Filtering should run close to players, with predictable routing and profiles tuned for each protocol. During an incident, the goal is stable packet delivery and playable latency, not only keeping the host online.

Game server DDoS checklist

List all public ports, including query, voice, panel and API services

Use protocol-aware filters for UDP and game-specific traffic

Choose mitigation locations close to the player base

Protect DNS and web dependencies alongside the game port

Track packet loss, jitter, latency and player disconnects

Keep emergency contacts and filter-change workflows ready

Gaming DDoS FAQ

Can DDoS protection increase game ping?

It can if traffic is routed far away or filtered inefficiently. Good gaming protection uses nearby PoPs and lightweight protocol profiles to keep latency stable.

Do Minecraft and Counter-Strike need different filters?

Yes. Game protocols behave differently, so filters should be tuned per service instead of relying on one generic UDP rule set.

Should voice servers be protected too?

Yes. TeamSpeak, Mumble, Discord bridges and other voice dependencies are common availability targets and should be included in the protection plan.

Keep players online

TMW Shield supports protocol-aware filtering and protected hosting for gaming communities, networks and real-time services.
